Blogging Hacks

There's a story over at JackOfAllBlogs that I found both funny and disturbing. It's a list of supposedly sure-fire ways to promote your blog. At first, it came across as a funny read, but after a little while, I started to actually think about some of the techniques listed. The guy's right. Unethical, but right.

Finding New Readers For Your Blog

There are thousands of blogs out there which makes the job of exposing your blog to new readers very difficult. There are the usual methods such as pinging sites like blo.gs. Then there's more shady systems of 'click exchanges'. I was leary of these services, mostly because it seemed like just a random traffic generator, without actually having people read the content. But I broke down and decided to try one out. I managed to find BlogClicker which is a click exchange system designed specifically for blogs. Basically, you sign up, register your blog, then start surfing other blogs using their web-based tool. You have to spend 20 seconds or more on a site, and you get credit for viewing that site. These credits will add your own site to other people's viewing (the more you view, the more your own site gets viewed). I've been using it for a couple of days, and I've managed to find a couple of very interesting blogs, as well as hopefully expose my blog to a new audience.

Some Movable Type Template Help

After discovering that the Movable Type templates from my older blog weren't 100% compatible with the new version, I started digging around to find out what I would need to modify in my old templates to keep the same look. It ended up being a bit more difficult than I had expected, so I just dropped in a default template for now. One interesting page I did find, however, was this one. It's a little older, but it gives a great description and visualization of the different areas of a Movable Type page.

Houston, we have a problem

No sooner did I blog my successful upgrade to Movable Type version 3.17, then I discovered a problem. MT would continually ask me to log in. I searched the MT forums, and eventually found that there was a known issue in 3.16 if the blog was in the root directory. The suggested workaround was to move the blog to a subdirectory on the web server. The forum went on to say that version 3.17 fixes the problem. Well, in my case, it didn't fix the problem. After spending a whole bunch of time trying to debug (and discovering that mt.cgi wasn't even sending me a cookie when I logged in), I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to the 3.2 beta. At least it's fixed my login problems...
